Intellectual Property Law · Indianapolis

Protecting the ideas you love.

Intellectual property counsel for inventors, creators, and growing businesses.

Combs Law, LLC is a small Indianapolis practice for people with something worth protecting: an invention, a brand, a body of work — and the contracts and licenses that turn it into a business. I spent 25 years in biotech before becoming a patent attorney, so when you explain what you've built, you won't have to translate.

About Combs Law

I'm Jessica Combs, a registered patent attorney and the founder of Combs Law, LLC. I'm licensed to practice law in Indiana and registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and I work with inventors, researchers, startups, and established companies who want their ideas protected properly.

Law is my second career. My first was 25 years in biotech, where I earned a master's in chemistry and worked on life-sciences technology and getting research out of the lab and into the world. That background changes how I practice: I read the science before I write the claims, and I care about whether your IP strategy actually fits your business, not just whether the paperwork gets filed. When you hire me, you get me — from the first phone call through filing and beyond.

"I spent 25 years making ideas. Now I protect them."

— Jessica Combs

I built this practice to be the kind of firm I'd want to call: small on purpose, easy to reach, and honest about what's worth pursuing.

How I can help

Patents

U.S. patent applications from drafting through prosecution, plus patentability and prior-art assessments. Life sciences and chemistry are home turf, but I work across technical fields.

Trademarks

Trademark clearance searches, federal registration before the USPTO, and guidance on building and protecting a brand as it grows.

Copyrights

Copyright registration and counseling to help authors, creators, and businesses protect original works and understand their rights.

Licensing

License agreements that put your IP to work — drafting and negotiating licenses, royalty terms, and technology transfer deals, on either side of the table.

Contracts & Transactions

Business contracts drafted, reviewed, and negotiated — service agreements, NDAs, vendor and consulting deals — plus IP assignments and the transactional work that keeps ownership clear before a dispute makes it expensive.

IP Strategy & Counseling

Practical, plain-English advice on how to build, manage, and prioritize an intellectual property portfolio that fits your goals and budget.

Commercial Arbitration

Representation in domestic and international commercial arbitration — including disputes over IP, licensing, and technology agreements — when a private, efficient forum beats the courtroom.

How I work

You'll always talk to me, not an assistant. I'll tell you up front what your matter should cost and what I think of your chances, even when the honest answer is "don't file this." And because I've sat on the client's side of the table in industry, I know how frustrating slow, vague lawyering is. I try to be neither.

Protecting the ideas you love.

Let's talk

Tell me a little about your invention, your brand, or the work you want protected, and I'll get back to you — usually within a business day.
